HOMETOWN HEROES: TRUE SERVICE ABOVE SELF

SpringFest to Feature Hometown Heroes Awards Ceremony Honoring Local Leaders

This year’s SpringFest, created by the South Portland–Cape Elizabeth Rotary Club in partnership with the City of South Portland, will include the Hometown Heroes Awards Ceremony, honoring exceptional individuals with the Paul Harris Fellow Award. The ceremony will occur at noon on Saturday, May 17, at the gazebo in Mill Creek Park as part of the community-wide celebration.

The Paul Harris Fellow Award, named for Rotary International's founder (Feb. 1905), is among the highest honors Rotary bestows. It recognizes individuals whose contributions to their communities reflect Rotary’s enduring motto: “Service Above Self.”

This year’s honorees exemplify that spirit through steadfast leadership and a deep commitment to the people of South Portland and Cape Elizabeth:

  • South Portland Police Chief Daniel Ahern
  • South Portland Fire Chief Phil Selberg
  • Cape Elizabeth Police Chief Paul Fenton
  • Cape Elizabeth Fire Chief Steve Young
  • Community leader, Linda Cohen

“These are individuals who go above and beyond in service, leadership, and compassion,” said Sari Greene, South Portland–Cape Elizabeth Rotary Community Service Director. “They are everyday heroes who inspire us all.”

“These leaders represent the very best of what it means to serve with integrity, compassion, and commitment,” said Nicole Albert, South Portland–Cape Elizabeth Rotary Foundation Committee Chair. “This recognition highlights the values that strengthen our communities and inspires all, especially younger generations who are watching and learning what true leadership looks like.”

The public is invited to attend the ceremony and recognize these local leaders' contributions. As part of SpringFest, the event promises to bring together community members in a joyful and meaningful celebration of service.

About SpringFest

SpringFest is a joyful, gnome-themed community celebration created by the Rotary Club of South Portland–Cape Elizabeth and the City of South Portland. Each May in Mill Creek Park, SpringFest brings together neighbors, local organizations, performers, and area businesses for fun, food, and connection. The 2025 festival takes place May 16–17, with activities kicking off Friday evening at Red Bank Community Center and continuing Saturday from 11 AM to 3 PM in Mill Creek Park.

This year’s theme, “Gnome Sweet Gnome,” reflects Rotary’s vision of building a stronger, more connected community through shared experiences. From live music and vendors to youth activities and community awards, SpringFest highlights the spirit of “Service Above Self.” Proceeds from event sponsorships from more than 70 local businesses and organizations support local causes and Rotary’s year-round charitable efforts.
